It is estimated that around 36 million suffer from premature ejaculation where they discharge their semen within five minutes of starting a sexual encounter. This encounter need not necessary end in penetration and the premature ejaculation could occur in the foreplay stage. |
For a man to actually suffer from premature ejaculation, he should discharge semen frequently before or immediately after starting sexual intercourse.
Many patients are treated with anti-depressants known as selection serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs); and Prozac falls under this category. It is due to the side effect of Prozac that doctors prescribe it for men suffering from premature ejaculation.
It is important to know that Prozac is not approved by the FDA for treating premature ejaculation and its use is basically off-label and has helped many men. Prozac helps to increase the time it takes for a man to ejaculate. It has to be taken daily or at least four hours prior to intercourse. However, it has been seen that taking the drug daily is more effective. It takes around two weeks for Prozac to start showing effect and thereafter many resort to taking it just before sexual intercourse.
A point to be noted it is that when it comes to premature ejaculation and Prozac, the drug does not increase libido or sexual drive. Instead it works by inhibiting orgasm or the reflex of sexual release. And it is this effect that helps men who suffer from premature ejaculation.
Some men may suffer from side effects after taking Prozac and they include reduced libido, nausea, diarrhea, headache, drowsiness, nervousness and dry mouth. However, doctors say that these side effects are very rare and compared to the benefits a man experiences in his sexual life, they are negligible.
