Prozac Overdose Neurological Damage
Neurotransmitters are the chemicals secreted by the brain that are responsible for controlling emotions and other psychological functions. Some of these neurotransmitters include Dopamine, Serotonin and Histamine.

Abnormal secretion of these neurotransmitters results in various psychological disorders including schizophrenia and depression. Prozac is an orally-administered antidepressant drug used to treat such psychological disorders. Active ingredient in Prozac is Fluoxetine hydrochloride, a psychotropic chemical agent that belongs to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class of drugs. Prozac has been approved by FDA for the treatment of clinical depression, obsessive compulsive disorder in adults and children, bulimia nervosa, panic disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Usage of Prozac combined with antidepressant drugs known as MAO inhibitors can result in fatal consequences. Hence, Prozac should never be recommended to patients using these types of drugs that include Nardil and Parnate. As like other psychotropic drugs, usage of Prozac results in a variety of side effects. Most common side effects of Prozac include abnormal vision, anxiety, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, rhinitis, headache, impotence, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, rash, sinusitis, insomnia, vomiting, weakness, tremors, sweating, abdominal disorders and abnormal ejaculation.

Overdose of Prozac can be fatal. Symptoms include nausea, seizures, uneven heartbeat, confusion, fainting and coma. In certain conditions, a Prozac overdose can result in permanent neurological damage. Neurological disorders caused due to Prozac include neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), Tardive Dyskinesia/Dystonia and Parkinsonism. Another important side effect of Prozac is Akathisia, a syndrome characterized by an inability to sit still or remain motionless. Serotonin Syndrome is another dangerous and potentially fatal side effect caused due to Prozac overdose. This syndrome is characterized by confusion, behavioral changes, agitation and in-coordinated muscle movements.
