Prempro, also known as conjugated estrogen / medroxyprogesterone acetate, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1995 for the treatment of post menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis.

Prempro can effectively reduce symptoms including moderate to severe hot flashes and night sweats, dryness, itching and burning in and around the vagina (vulvar and vaginal atrophy). Manufactured by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, Prempro is the first medication available for hormone replacement therapy and is still one of the most popular drugs used by menopausal women who have not undergone hysterectomy.

Prempro is a FDA Category X drug whose usage in pregnant and lactating women is strictly prohibited. Prempro can cause serious birth defects in new born babies. However, there are various other serious risks associated with use of Prempro. Long-term treatment of Prempro can increase the risk of breast cancer, blood clots, heart attack or stroke. Conjugated estrogens increase the risk of developing endometrial hyperplasia, a condition that may lead to uterine cancer. Apart from the life-threatening side effects of the drug, there are also various other common to severe side effects caused by Prempro. Some of these include irregular vaginal bleeding, vision problems, depression, coughing up blood, acne, dizziness, breast lumps, severe abdominal pain, breast tenderness, sleep disorders, decreased libido, weight gain and increased uterine fibroids.

In 2003, the USFDA directed the manufacturers to issue a box-type warning on the labels to emphasize the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, stroke and breast cancer due to Prempro. Manufacturers of Prempro have failed in their responsibility of informing physicians and patients about the risks associated with the medication. As a result, they can be held responsible to patients who have suffered injury or incurred losses as a result of Prempro. One can file a lawsuit against the manufacturers seeking claim to compensate for the suffered injury and financial loss.
