Evista And Blood Clot Symptoms
Raloxifene hydrochloride is marketed under the brand name Evista. Evista belongs to a particular class of drugs known as Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators or SERMs. Estrogen is a female sex hormone that also plays a significant role in bone metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, breast tissue development and uterine development. Estrogen delays bone loss. However, once the menopause starts, the levels of estrogen in the blood start to decrease. Due to this, there is an increased bone loss resulting in breakage of bones and osteoporosis. Evista is used in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis that occurs in women as a postmenopausal symptom.
Evista acts by selectively binding to the estrogen receptors in the bone tissue and modulating the natural effects of estrogen. Evista does not have any effect on the estrogen receptors present in the breast or uterus. Although long term usage of Evista has not been associated with occurrence of breast or endometrial cancer, it has been associated with increased risk of developing blood clots in the veins, a condition known as venous thromboembolism. Other medical complications arising due to Evista include pulmonary embolus or development of clots in lung veins and deep vein thrombosis.
Most clots are seen in veins originating from legs. Symptoms are observed only when large sized clots develop in the veins. Large clots in the blood vessels can seriously affect the lung’s ability to transfer oxygen to the blood and also increase pressure on the heart to pump blood at an increased rate, resulting in difficulty in breathing, chest pain and rapid heart rate. In case of deep vein thrombosis, a patient taking Evista should immediately consult a doctor if a swelling, redness or pain in observed in a leg or arm that is not present in the other limb.
