Plantar warts are non-cancerous growths that occur on the sole, heel, or the ball of the foot. Standing and walking with these warts often spreads the infection to the deeper layers of the skin on the foot. In some cases, warts disappear on their own. However, podiatrists often recommend removing the plantar warts to get relief from pain and irritation. |
There are several ways to treat large plantar warts. The treatment usually takes a few months to show complete healing. The success rate varies from one patient to another. Plantar warts can reappear if treatment is stopped in the middle of the course. So, it is important to continue treatment until all symptoms have disappeared, and there is no more pain or infection.
Home remedies have proved to be effective in successfully treating plantar warts. Application of an over-the-counter salicylic acid preparation, available at most local pharmacies, helps to soothe the pain. Immersing the affected feet in hot water for 1.5 hours daily or applying vitamin A by breaking open a vitamin A capsule directly onto the large wart are few of the popular home treatments for plantar warts. Each of these remedies can take anywhere between one to nine months to completely cure.
If the plantar wart grows bigger and gets more painful, then medical help should be sought. Doctors treat the warts depending on the size, density and severity of infection. The common medical treatments use mild acids to burn off the wart or use laser to terminate the warts. Other options are freezing the warts using cryotherapy, or carefully cutting off the wart with a scalpel.
