Statistics And Cure Of Mumps
Mumps is caused by an infection from the Paramyxovirus virus. It is a highly contagious illness and results in fever and severe swelling of the neck. Before mumps vaccine was discovered, nearly 90 percent of mumps cases in the U.S. were seen in children under the age of 15. However, with the advancement in medical sciences there are fewer than thousand cases in the United States.
The mumps virus lives in the mucus of the nose and throat and in the saliva of the infected person. When the infected person coughs or sneezes, droplets get sprayed in the air and they can enter an uninfected person’s noise or throat when they breathe, resulting in mumps infection being spread.
Cure for Mumps
Unfortunately, there is just one cure for mumps and that is time. The good news is that our body is an effective fighting machine which can destroy the mumps virus in most cases and one or two weeks after the onset of the illness, mumps symptoms usually fade away. However, during the illness, mumps treatment and cure is supportive. This means that the symptoms are treated.
The best cure for mumps is prevention and this can be achieved by taking mumps vaccine. Statistics show that before the advent of mumps vaccine in 1967 there 100,000 to 200,000 cases each year in the U.S. However, after the introduction of mumps vaccine, the number of reported cases has drastically decreased to a few hundred each year.
Mumps vaccine is given as a part of MMR vaccine which stands for Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine. MMR vaccine is effective 80 percent of the time after just one dose in preventing mumps, and the efficacy of the mumps vaccine increases to 90 percent after two doses.
