Case Management of Hemophilia

Hemophilia is an X-chromosome linked congenital bleeding disorder that is passed from the mother to the child. The frequency of hemophilia is 1 in 10,000 births and it caused by a deficiency of either coagulation factor VIII (hemophilia A) or factor IX (hemophilia B). There are approximately 400,000 people affected by hemophilia worldwide. Hemophilia A is more common than hemophilia B and nearly 80 to 85 percent of hemophiliacs have hemophilia A.

In the last few decades, effective therapy is being made available for people suffering from hemophilia. However, there are still many unresolved issues when it comes to case management of hemophilia. These issues are related to doses and duration of factor replacement therapy, immune tolerance induction and surgical prophylaxis.

People suffering from hemophilia need special case management so that they can deal with difficult issues like finding appropriate care and resources. Many times it has been seen that people suffering from hemophilia are overwhelmed with their medical needs. That is why case management of hemophilia requires a lot more than just treatment and prevention of bleeding.

Many people suffering from hemophilia also end up with musculoskeletal problems because of frequent bleeding. Case management of hemophilia should also deal with long-term management of joint and muscle damage. They require long-term management to combat viral infections which can get transmitted to them through blood transfusions.

Case management of hemophilia requires a comprehensive medical care team which should include a hematologist, nurse, physiotherapist and a social worker who can guide and help the patient to deal with his problem and also assist him to find sources of funding to fund his medical care if the insurance does not cover hemophilia.
