Invasive Candidiasis Symptoms

Invasive candidiasis is a form of fungal infection when the Candida fungus enters the bloodstream and spreads the infection not just in the blood but also throughout the body.

In the U.S., candidemia, a form of invasive candidiasis, is the fourth most common blood infection. Out of 100,000 people a year, candidemia occurs in 8. Those who are more prone to candidemia are babies born with low birth weight, people with weak immune systems and patients who have undergone surgeries.

Invasive Candidiasis Symptoms
The symptoms of invasive candidiasis are not very specific. However, some of the most common invasive candidiasis symptoms are fever and chills which do not improve even after a course of antibiotics. Some times, invasive candidiasis spreads to internal organs like kidneys, liver, muscles, bones, spleen, joints and even the eyes. When this happens, more symptoms manifest themselves and symptoms vary depending on the site of infection. Under extreme circumstances, if invasive candidiasis does not respond to treatment, the infected organs may fail leading to the death of the patient.

Invasive candidiasis infection occurs when the infected person’s own Candida fungus enter the blood. Candida is usually found in the digestive tract. On rare occasions, invasive candidiasis also develops if the medical and surgical equipment are contaminated by Candida.

Invasive candidiasis is usually diagnosed with the help of either a blood culture or by examining the infected tissue mass under a microscope. Doctors recommend treating invasive candidiasis by giving Amphotericin B intravenously or giving azole drugs intravenously or orally.
