Illnesses That Cause Thrush
The candida fungus causes thrush infection. This infection is also called yeast infection. Thrush usually occurs in the mouth but it can infect other parts of the body as well. Women get vaginal yeast infection while thrush manifests in infants as diaper rash. Anyone can get thrush but babies, older adults and people with weak immune system are most susceptible to thrush.
Under normal circumstances small amounts of candida fungus is present in the mouth, skin and digestive tract of healthy people. The fungus is controlled by other bacteria in the body. However, certain illnesses, medications or stress disturbs the balance of bacteria and microorganisms leading to a proliferation of candida fungus thus causing thrush.
If you are taking corticosteroids, antibiotics or birth control pills, you can get thrush. Illnesses like severe diabetes, HIV infection, and cancer are more conducive to causing thrush. If you are pregnant or suffer from dry mouth, you can develop thrush. People who smoke or wear dentures are prone to thrush. Nursing mothers suffering from thrush can pass on the infection to babies through breastfeeding.
It has been seen that 90 percent of people with HIV develop thrush at some point of the other during the course of their disease. If you have a dry mouth, it could be because of overuse of a mouthwash or a condition called Siogren’s Syndrome. You are more prone to thrush if you suffer from a dry mouth or have poor dental care.
Some times thrush infection is because of hormonal changes in the body and not because of an illness. These hormonal changes usually occur in a woman at the time of pregnancy which leads to an alteration of bacteria in the body. During pregnancy, women are more prone to developing thrush and they should take care.
