      Using a condom is an effective method of protecting yourself from sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. However, many men do not know how to put on a condom, which can cause problems if it ruptures or slips off.

  

Listed below are basic steps that need to be followed while putting a condom.

  1. One should make sure that the condoms are fresh and in good condition. It is not wise to use condoms that have gone past their expiry date. Condoms that have been washed or squeezed should not be used.
  2. Tear along one side of the condom wrapper. One should be careful not to rip the condom inside.
  3. Next part is to ensure that the right side of the condom is out. The rolling should be on the outside. The condom should unroll easily down the penis.
  4. Remove the air trapped inside the condom. For this, the close end of the condom should be squeezed between the forefinger and thumb. Air trapped inside can cause the condom to break. Now, place the condom on over the penis.
  5. The penis should be completely erect so that the condom is properly placed. Condom should be placed on the penis before the penis gets in contact with the partner’s skin. For putting on the condom, the foreskin needs to be pulled back first in case the penis in uncircumcised. For those who have undergone circumcision, condom can be placed directly on the erect penis.
  6. While keeping the closed end squeezed with one hand, the condom should be unrolled gently down the penis using the other hand as far as it goes. It is important that the condom stays in place during sex.  
  7. Soon after ejaculation, one should withdraw the penis from the vagina while it is still in erect condition. While withdrawing the penis, one should be careful to hold the condom firmly in place. The condom should now be gently removed once the penis is completely withdrawn. It is important to keep the penis and the condom away from contact with the partner’s body. Used condom should be immediately discarded in a hygienic manner.
