| Life expectancy can be described as a statistical means of calculating the average survival period of a living being or the average number of years a person can live before encountering death. |
One important reason due to which life expectancy of a human tends to decrease is an infection or disease.
Remarkable developments occurring in the field of medical science has helped in improving the average life expectancy of a person in the last 100 years. However, these developments have also given rise to several life-threatening diseases such as HIV/AIDS and HPV. Life expectancy still remains a major issue in countries affected by these diseases.
The human papilloma virus or HPV is one of the most dreaded sexually transmitted infections whose role has been established as an important precursor to cervical cancer. Apart from this, the role of HPV has also been observed in various other types of malignancies such as cancer of the penis, anus, vagina or vulva. Ironically, cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Every year, more than 4.5 million new cases of cervical cancer get registered. These mortality rates are higher in developing nations in comparison to developed nations like the United States. This is largely due to unavailability of different screening methods for cervical cancer. According to a study conducted by a group of scientists, lifetime risk of invasive cervical cancer without screening is 3.4 percent. Deaths due to cervical cancer can be avoided if the person is screened for the presence of HPV using different screening strategies like HPV DNA testing and Pap smears.
However, cervical cancer does not occur in every person who gets infected with a HPV. In most cases, a HPV infection is asymptomatic and goes undetected. The infection gets cleared from the body on its own.
