| Vaccination is a remarkable way of developing immune response in an individual against a particular pathogen. Two such important vaccines that have been approved by the USFDA and currently available in the market include Gardasil and Cervarix, designed and developed for preventing transmission and providing protection against sexually transmitted strains of human papilloma virus that can cause infections and diseases like genital warts and cervical cancer. |
Gardasil is a quadrivalent recombinant vaccine manufactured and marketed by Merck. It provides protection against HPV subtypes 6, 11, 16 and 18. Cervarix is another recombinant HPV vaccine manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and provides protection against HPV subtypes 16 and 18.
According to the information published by the manufacturers, a shot of Gardasil can result in side effects that include itching, inflammation and redness at the site of injection, mild nausea, fever and dizziness. According to the health authorities based in the US and Canada, administration of this vaccine is safe as it does not result in any serious health complications. Some people, who are allergic to the vaccine, can develop a serious allergic reaction that includes difficulty in breathing, wheezing, and an unusual skin rash and sever itching. There have been certain other side effects that have been reported in few patients administered with the vaccine. Some of these include Guillian-Barre syndrome, paralysis, seizures, blood clots, heart attacks and even deaths.
In comparison to Gardasil, Cervarix has been found to boost the immune response against the pathogen for a longer period of time. Some common side effects published by the manufacturer include redness, inflammation and pain at the site of injection, headache, aching muscles, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, joint pains and diarrhea.
