| Administration of HPV vaccinations is an important way of preventing human papilloma virus (HPV) infections in people. The only available vaccine approved by USFDA for human use is Gardasil, a quadrivalent recombinant vaccine manufactured and marketed by Merck. |
The vaccine provides protection against four different subtypes of HPV that are considered to be the major causative factors of diseases like cervical cancer and genital warts. However, issues such as the efficacy of this vaccine and its safety are being questioned by experts.
As per the documents that were obtained from the US Food and Drug Administration, Gardasil seems to have really dangerous side effects. During the period from June 8, 2006 to May 2007, a series of patients were administered the vaccine. Among these, there were 1,637 negative reports. Out of these, majority of side effects were pain, fever, nausea, dizziness and itching. An interesting fact is that these side effects are the same as published by the manufacturer. However, there were also reports where patients complained about paralysis, Bells Palsy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, seizures, blood clots and heart attacks. Three patients died within days of getting administered with the vaccine due to blood clots and heart attacks. Out of 42 women who received this vaccine at the time of pregnancy, 18 patients reported adverse side effects that included spontaneous abortion and fetal abnormalities. This data was revealed by Judicial Watch, a public interest group involved in investigating and prosecution corruption issues related to the government.
In another startling revelation, around 1800 adverse reactions were reported in patients administered with Gardasil from May 2007 to September 2007 that also included reports of 8 deaths.
