World Aids Day History
     It was during the World Summit of Ministers of Health on AIDS, held in London during January 1988, that the representatives of about 140 countries decided to get together in their fight against AIDS and expressed their solidarity in this noble endeavor.  

     Later on October 27, 1988, during the 38th plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, the World Health Organization had declared December 1, 1988 as the World AIDS Day. Since 1997, year round campaigns based on certain themes related to HIV and AIDS are being conducted.

      World AIDS Day is dedicated to raising awareness through infection awareness campaigns involving the youth of the nation. On this day, church services and memorials are held to honor people who lost their lives to this deadly disease. On this day, every year, the government agencies and representatives from civil society come forward and campaign using a particular themes. The annual World AIDS Day themes since 1988 include the following:

2004: Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS: Have you heard me today?
2003: Stigma and Discrimination

2001: Men Make a Difference: I care, do you? (two-year campaign)
2000: AIDS: Men Make a Difference (two-year campaign)
1999: Listen, Learn, Live! World AIDS Campaign with Children and Young People
1998: Force for Change: World AIDS Campaign with Young People
1997: Children Living in a World with AIDS
1996: One World. One Hope
